KISTERS’ easy-to-use rising stage sampler RSS is the ideal device for the automatic collection of samples from flashy, intermittent streams at remote or not easily accessible sites, which are visited by personnel at infrequent intervals.
The RSS is a horizontal intake sampler for sampling suspended sediments coarser than 62 microns. The intake is inclined slightly downward to prevent the accumulation of sediment in the outer end of the intake. The use of the RSS is recommended where water surface surge does not exceed 65 mm (2.5 inches) and the velocity does not exceed 1.2 m/s (4 feet/sec).
The RSS is made from robust durable materials and it is easy to install and maintain. Containers in different sizes, stands and a mounting assembly are available.
Operation
As the water rises in the stream it reaches the crown of the intake, flow starts over the crown, and begins to fill the bottle. Sampling ceases when the level of the water in the bottle reaches the inner end of the air exhaust that prevents circulation through the sampler. An air-lock also forms in the intake and prevents enrichment of the sample from water flowing back and forward in the intake and transporting sediment into the sample container.
